Ways for Promoting Literacy and Love for Reading in Kids.

Ways for Promoting Literacy and Love for Reading in Kids.

Are you a parent and you don't know how to promote literacy and love for reading? Has your child ever developed the  problem of reading ? Don't worry.

Certainly, promoting literacy and love for reading in kids is a wonderful way to set and prepare them for lifetime of learning and enjoyment. I have prepared various tips that can help your kid to develop love for literacy and reading

1.Start early.

Begin to read to your child as early as from infant, even if the kid doesn't understand the wording, but they can enjoy the sounds and rhythms and tone of your voice. You may wonder how possible is that, but keep on reading for him or her. Just have a positive mind for your kid even if she has not developed fully. By doing so you create love for reading.

2. Create a Reading Routine.

Ensure that you stick to your reading schedule. You should have a daily reading routine such as bedtime stories, this will broaden your baby's mind and makes reading a habit.

3. Be a role model in reading

Children often emulate or copy their parents behavior. You should try and read books, magazines, newspapers infront of your children. They will be motivated and become eager to know how to read on those journals.

Don't ever deny the kid the chance even to look at the pictures inside the books or Newspaper, because if you rebuke them , they will develop negative attitudes towards reading

4. Read A loud.

Ensure that you read a loud to your kids, even after they start reading on their own . Also allow them to read  loud so that they can have the following benefits:

  • Helps in building vocabulary.
  • Improves comprehension and active listening.
  • Reduces stress and makes them happy.
  • It improves working memory.

5. Build a Home Library

Ensure  that your home has a variety of age appropriate reading books. The library should contain books like Sound and Read,My first Book to Read,My first Sound to Read, from pre-school up to University levels. You can also take your kids to community libraries or the National Libraries to read more books.

6. Join a Reading Program.

As a parent you should search and know the community that have reading programs and events for kids. For example the kid can join various clubs for reading in the society . Even some churches have the the programs for children participating in the competition of reading from the scriptures. They are told to open a certain chapter and a verse and the first one to get is being rewarded. This will create curiosity for children to read more.

7. Ask Questions

Give the child time to read a book and then ask the questions. Either you can ask them to narrate what they have read, characters or their favourite parts. Through asking questions makes them to be more keen and develop more concentration when reading a certain story. It also helps them to comprehend and develop critical thinking.

8. Let them choose.

Allow your kid to choose or select books that interest them. Even if it's not what you would  like to choose, their enthusiasm for the topic is more important. Do not ever.111 discourage them for the books they have chosen. Just encourage them to read and contemplate what is in the book. Respect their reading choices, even if they want to reread the same books ,just allow them and don't be harsh to them.

9. Limit Screen Time

Most of the kids nowadays are fond of looking at the screen so much. They can mean to watch their favourite movies of various series, either of cartoons and forget to read. You should set strict rules and boundaries when to watch the screen. Be encouraging the kid to read by setting reasonable limits on screen time,so that they have time for books.

10. Make it Fun.

You should employ funny voices and be humorous and comedic. If it's a story of a dog and a cat, just where and be like a dog or a cat and start reading for them. They will never forget about the stories and they will develop the interest of reading the books.

12. Celebrate Achievements. Whenever a baby makes a milestone in reading books, just appreciate them. Give them appraisal awards even by congratulating them or even promise to buy them their favourite toys or items, this will accelerate their reading habits. Positive reinforcement encourages reading . Always avoid small criticism even if they haven't achieved what you needed. By supporting them and encouraging them, gives them hope to work hard.

13. Support their Curiosity.

Most of the kids are curious and they keep on discovering and asking new things about certain areas like .Why am I a boy or a girl, who is God and who created me.You can read for them books and explain to them so that they can easily understand. Take time to look for answers in the books and they will develop and will like reading.

14. Visit Author Events.

If possible look for the authors of the books or attend author's events or books signing to show the real people behind the stories.

Conclusion

Promoting literacy and love for reading starts with you as a parent. Always remember to encourage your child to read by building a home library, supporting their curiosity, reading in their presence.

Remember to share, comment and like. You can also add some tips on building literacy and love for reading.

Are you tired of fighting the bedtime battle with your little ones?Do they keep on tossing and resist going to bed and keep on turning all night long? I understand how difficult and frustrating it can be,but what if I tell you that a good night sleep is not just important for your sanity but also for your child's overall health and well being.

The following are tips for and tricks to help your child  get the rest they need:

1. Set an individualized bedtime

Most kids have patterns that  don't change much,no matter what you do.Those who have the routine of waking up earlier even if they sleep late, they will still wake up earlier. They stay awake for some hours until their bodies are ready.

2.Set a wake up time

Setting a wake up time based on how long your kid needs time to go to bed and sleep. Create awake up time routine as early as preschool years to prevent stress in future and be consistent with the schedule.

Even if it's  a weekend or a holiday , don't try to change the schedule because the kid will adjust to the current situation and when school time reaches ,they will be horrible to handle.

3.Create a consistent bedtime routine

Before dinner if the kid has come from school, they should have a light playtime, bath,do homework, bedtime story and then sleep. The routine should be accommodative and comforting.

4.Put off screens

Too much of screens affects the baby's emotional development including sleep disturbance, obesity, depression and anxiety. It promotes aggressive behaviours and hinder social and emotional competence.

Some of the parents have the tendency of giving their kids androids even at earlier age ,not knowing that they are destroying the emotional development of the kids.

Also the kids can mean to watch their favourite cartoons or movies ,until even if they are pressed for short and long call ,they ignore and they soil for themselves.

You are supposed to switch off  or keep away your child from screens ,to create more time for sleeping.

5.Create a sleep-conducive environment

Make sure that the bedroom should be clean  meaning you should ensure that all distractive things that make your kid not to sleep well are well organized.

Ensure that beddings are soft, the lights should be switched off to help the kid to distinguish  between day and night. Also any kid of noise should be avoided to enable the kid to fall a sleep easily.

6.Keep it cool

The sleeping room should not be too cold or too hot. The temperature should be moderate and accommodating to the child. You should address the kid in a breathable cotton pyjamas and keep the room temperature at 65 to 70' F at night according to Whitney Roban,PhD, Clinical psychologist and sleep specialist.

7.Be on the look out for sleep disorders

Always try to find out what makes the kid to have sleep disorders. It could be nightmares that makes the child to be scared, maybe she could be snoring or disturbed by snores from others or breath through the mouth. Just consult your pediatrician Incase of any concerns .

8.Get exercise

Make sure your kid always plays a physical activity for 1 hour, because it makes the kid to relax her mind and accelerate the sleep. The kid falls a sleep faster inorder to recover the energy lost during the day. Alternatively, kids should avoid vigorously activities with 2 hours of bedtime.

Importance of good Night's sleep to kids

A good Night's sleep is paramount importance for children as it plays crucial role in overall development and well being.

It's a period which various physiological and psychological processes occur.

  • It helps children replenish their energy level, promote optimal physical growth and development.

How to balance workload at home and at work as a mother.

Many mothers have a lot to sacrifice so that they can balance the workload. It needs commitment and submission inorder to succeed.

Am the one of them who struggles to fit at home and at office. I normally work up at 4 am ,prepare breakfast and I dress my kids and make sure they have taken their breakfast before they step out for school.

There are at times I feel like giving up. Imagine you have a 6 month year old , when you wake up to prepare breakfast the kid has woken up. It forces me to stop whatever I am doing ,I breastfed her intending for a sleep the kids end up playing.

She starts to cheer at you. Sometimes you feel like pinching her ,but your ego can't allow you because she is a kid. So I have to entice her with breastfeeding until she eventually sleeps.

There are at times she deceives that she has slept only to be amazed the calling of ma.ma.ma.  imagine that's is almost 5:30 a.m and the older kid are waiting for you.

Sometimes at work it's so stressful. You are supposed to work from 8am to 5pm and you need to travel at a longer distance. Most of the time I am late for work because I can't manage to be on time.

During the clock out , I travel to a murram road. When it rains the motorbike sometimes tends not to pass through, because the roads are mud. It forces me to walk on foot for a longer miles so that I avoid getting stuck.

There are times I get rained on because I don't have any alternative. I don't have a personal car, so I have to wait until the rain stops so that I can proceed with my journey. Imagine it's almost 6pm and am supposed to be at home . Most of the times I reach home at 7:40-8:pm.

You are tired and upon reaching home , your house chores are waiting for you. You need to act out faster like a mother of the house ,so that things will not be in a mess.

Has or do your kids normally eat their food without any problem. Take a case where you prepare food and when you serve them ,it becomes hide and seek. Sometimes you have to sweet talk to them with all manners of names Daddy,PAPA,MUM,MA'AM and other names,so that they can eat well.

So it is my responsibility to organize myself and plan on my day to day activities, so that I can fulfill the task of the day. Even if you fill tired and exhausted and sometimes try to help your nanny so that your kids will have a good life.

Just don't forget to leave your comment and share to your friends.

APowerful Bedtime Night Prayer (WITH WORDS) | Prayer For Peace | Protection and Goodnight Sleep!

Personal connection with the Lord it's the vehicle that opens up the heavens so that your requests and petitions may be heard.

I believe praying before you sleep is a great way to end your day .So many things can happen during a day, so many things could have happened , so many things might have happened, but don't overlook the fact that you are loved and cared for by the Lord Jesus christ so much.

So that He kept you, he protected you and kept you safe .

Today consider how many people in the world woke up today, but won't ever sleep in their bed again .

So at the end of each and every day, take a moment to appreciate life ,take a moment to appreciate the goodness of God ,his protection and his mercy, take a moment just to simply say thank you Lord for keeping me safe today, thank you for your protection and for your grace and I say all of this so that you might experience the peace that is spoken of in the bible.

In john 14 verse 27

It says Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

To summarize what this scripture says ,it is well  I have peace, because the word of God tells me not to let my heart be troubled ,I have peace because the word of God tells me too not be afraid.

Jeremiah 17 verse 7. It says the blessed is the man who trusts the lord, whose confidence is in him.

So now I encourage you to repeat thisprayer after me,but most importantly believe that the Lord is listening.

Raise your faith and speak these words with boldness and conviction and now let us pray.

Lord jesus I thank you for seeing me through this day,

I thank you for ordering my steps and protecting me and this evening Lord I ask for your mercy.

Forgive me for sinning whether in thought or deed, forgive me lord, clean my life with your precious blood,my praise and adoration is only to you because all glory belongs to you.

All the honor belongs to you, tonight I invite your presence to be all-around me,

I invite you to create a peaceful and holy atmosphere in my room, holy spirit you are welcome in this place as I end my day.

Father I stand and I believe on your word.Your word which tells me,that when I trust in you,I will be like a tree planted by the waters,I will not fear when heat comes, but my leaves will be green and I will not be anxious in the year of drought.

I thank you lord for your word, your word that reassures me to trust you,for when I trust you, then I know that I have strength ,I have hope in tomorrow.

When I trust you Lord Jesus then I can never be removed or separated from you,and so I place my heart and soul in your hands.

Thank you for your kindness and love,I take you lord as my only refuge, you are the one who lays a hold of me after a long day,and it's in you that I find sweet rest and i pray that you give me peaceful rest tonight.

Lord watch over me and guard me with your angels,to you Lord Jesus my savior I commit all of my trust,I commit all of my concerns and burdens.

Father as I seek your face and your presence,I have an expectant heart that you will have mercy on me and hear my prayer.

I am grateful that you are always available when i need you,you are always there to offer your love and grace,so  I look to you for direction I look to you for counsel,I refuse to lean on my own understanding because when I look at the way things are and everything going on in this world, I realize that true peace and lasting joy can only be found in you lord Jesus.

This time I pray that you guard my family, guard my loved ones,I have faith in you to be a hedge of protection around me even for my family.

I believe you will even form a hedge of protection around my family and my loved ones,

I ask that you place a hedge of protection around our health and around my home so that the enemy may know not to come6any further and not to touch me or my family.

I ask that you give me the strength, give me the faith to stand firm in your word, your word that says in

Ephesians 6:16  In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

With your word as a lamp to my feet Lord I can stand firm and endure any trial.I pray that you stand by me Lord Jesus,I don't know what I will face tomorrow, but I do know that your word tells me to submit to you for you will make my path straight.

I know that your word in the book of Isaiah tells me that, when I pass through the waters you will be with me and when I pass through the rivers they will not sweep over me,when I walk through the fire I will not be burned and the flames will not set me ablaze.

In your word I place my confidence for tomorrow,in your word I place my hope and faith for tomorrow, you are a God who never sleeps nor slumbers ,but you are always watching over me.

You are faithful not to let my foot slip, you are faithful to renew your mercies every morning.I thank you father for being a God who knows the number of hairs on my head and you say in your word that I am not to fear because I am more valuable to you than many sparrows.

My dear lord  I ask that the blood of Jesus Christ ,the risen King to cover my steps, everything I can ever need or want can be found in you.

Healing can only be found in you, restoration comes only through you and my protection is under the blood of Jesus, the blood that never loses its power.I bless your name and I trust you to watch over me

Thank you for hearing my prayer in the mighty name of Jesus Christ

Amen.

DOs and DON'Ts of Tummy Time: Time Time For Babies and Tummy Time Newborns

DOs and DON'Ts of Tummy Time: Time Time For Babies and Tummy Time Newborns

Do you have a newborn baby,

and you're not sure how to do tummy time or how often you should be doing it?

Or you have a one, two, three month old baby who absolutely hates tummy time?

Well, this video is for you!

Today I'm going to share tips on everything you need to know about tummy

time, including the do's and don'ts of tummy time,

which will ensure that tummy time in itself is a fun activity for your baby.

And most importantly, it is not stressful for you as was parents.ich will make your life as parents significantly easier and ensure your child

gets the best start to life. If that's something you're interested in,

Tummy time is when you lie your baby on their tummy.

And it's really important because it helps develop the muscles in their head,

their neck, their upper body,

which are all muscles that are required when they're learning to roll, sit up,

crawl and walk.

It's important to know that a lot of babies fuss and cry when they're put onto

their tummy. Particularly when you're just starting out, tummy time.

And that's because it's a really, really hard activity for them.

Their muscles are having to work really hard to lift their head.

And they also can't see a lot when they're in this position and they can't use

their hands.

So tummy time is really important for your baby's overall strength and

development. And I know you've been told that a lot.

And I promise as your baby gets stronger in this position,

they're going to be less fussy when they're in tummy time.

But what they need to do is have continual exposure to practicing tummy time,

because that's the only way we get strong.

Our muscles get strong as if we practice that activity quite regularly.

Now I know you're probably thinking I have a newborn baby and they just hate it.

Or I've got a one, two, three month old baby and they hate tummy time.

So today I'm going to share with you my dos and don'ts of tummy time,

which will, I promise, will actually make tummy time,

a lot easier for your baby. So they're going to start to enjoy it.

And then they'll be more willing to practice this activity.

And it will be less stressful for you as parents. So what am I dos and don'ts?

Firstly, do start tummy time straight away.

So you can start tummy time as soon as you get home from the hospital,

if you have a baby who was born full term and they have no medical conditions.

What you're aiming for as a newborn,

is that your baby will only be in the tummy time position or one to two minutes,

and then you'll flip them onto their back.

And you'll do this multiple times throughout the day.

So key word there is 'day'. We don't do tummy time at night.

So you do it multiple times throughout the day.

You would generally do every wake period that your baby goes through.

So they would wake up from their nap. You do one to two minutes of tummy time,

and then they'll go have another nap and then they'll have another wake period.

And you do tummy time again. So by three months of age,

your baby should be able to do an hour total of tummy time in the day.

So again, remember, that's broken up into parts.

I'm not expecting a baby at three months of age to stay in the tummy time

position for an hour.

What you are expecting is that maybe they'll do tummy time six times a day.

So that's for 10 minute blocks throughout the day.

So starting tummy time early makes it so that the baby knows that this is just

part of their routine.

So that they'll go onto their tummy for a short period of time and then you flip

them onto their back and they'll be happy.

Doing it straight away means that it will be routine for your baby,

but also for you. And if you haven't done tummy time from the beginning,

that's fine. You just start now.

Do tummy time when your baby is alert and awake.

So we do tummy time in the day.

We don't do it at night and we make sure that we're always supervising our baby

when you place them on their tummy.

And that's just to ensure that if they get really tired and they can't clear

their head, you're going to be there to roll them quickly onto their back.

So you do it when they're alert and awake.

The other thing is I would generally do it after a breastfeed.

So your baby will wake up, then you'll feed them and change their nappy.

Then they're happy for a short period of time.

So that's when I would recommend doing tummy time.

When your baby is happy and they're not hungry or grizzly. Just a heads up,

usually around two weeks of age,

your baby will start to get a bit fussy and clingy in the afternoons and

evenings.

And at this time they actually won't like being on the ground to do tummy time.

So I would generally do the chest to chest tummy time.

So this leads me into my next do,

which is make sure you do use the different tummy time positions.

So there's actually four different tummy time positions.

The first tummy time position that you can do is that traditional tummy time

where your baby's lying on the floor and their arms are resting under their

body. This is quite a difficult tummy time position.

The second tummy time position is the chest to chest tummy time position.

So that is where you're lying on a surface and then your baby's chest is on top

of your chest and they're able to look up at you during tummy time.

The third position is when your baby is lying across your lap.

And then the fourth position is called the football hold.

So where you're holding your baby in your arms.

So it's where your baby is lying in your arms.

And their head is resting in your elbow cease, near your elbow,

and you provide support at their hips and they will lift their head up.

You can also do this position with your baby facing outwards,

where you provide support under their arm and then your other arm is providing

support along their length of their body. And they will lift their head up.

I find it easier to do it the other way.

And I think the baby's able to lift their head easier,

particularly in the first few months,

when your baby's developing that neck strength. I would generally use the other,

the first football hold position.

The next thing I would recommend is that you do try and make tummy time easier

for your baby. So when your baby's first, during tummy time,

they tend to be top heavy. And by that,

I mean that a lot of their weight is towards their head and their shoulders,

their body. So they aren't actually able to lift their head very easily.

So we can make tummy time, all those four positions that I showed you before,

a lot easier.

And that's by providing support to them and trying to shift the weight to

their hips and their legs so that they can lift their head easier.

So I'm going to explain how you can do that in the four positions.

So in the traditional tummy time position where your baby's lying on the ground

flat,

you can make that significantly easier for your baby by putting your,

um, hand on their hip. And that will shift the weight to their legs.

So they'll be able to find it easier to lift their head.

The other thing you can do is place a rolled up towel under their arms,

and that will prop their body up the front part of their body up, which again,

will make it easier to lift their head because it shifts all the weight to their

legs. In the chest to chest position. So where your baby's lying on your chest,

you can do it a few ways.

So first thing is if obviously if you're lying flat on a bed and your baby's

lying on the chest,

they're having to lift their head up against a significant amount of gravity.

So it's a lot harder than if you were reclined in a chair.

So I would generally do the chest to chest firstly, reclined in a chair.

So your back is propped up so that your baby is already kind of propped up

and it makes it easier for them to lift their head because they're not having to

lift against so much gravity. The other thing you can do in this position,

is that you provide support at their hips.

Again by putting your hand on their hips or their bottom.

And that will help shift the weight to the back of their legs.

And the other thing you can do is provide support at their forearms.

So you hold their forearms in place. And again,

that ensures that they're able to put weight through their arms,

which makes it easier for them to lift their head.

The other position is the football hold.

So you can make that significantly easier for your bub by putting your hand on

their hip or their bottom. So it again,

shifts the weight back to the back of their legs,

so that it's easier for them to lift their head.

The other thing you can do is obviously when your arm is straight like this,

they're having to lift their head against significant amount of gravity.

So if you recline your arm, so tilt your arm a bit, then there's less gravity.

So they're able to lift their head easier.

Now we're not expecting them to prop on their arms in this position,

but we are wanting them to kind of work on lifting their head.

So the last position we talked about was lying your baby across your leg.

You can make this significantly easier for your baby.

So if you can imagine if both your legs are level,

then your baby's having to lift their head against a lot of gravity,

But if you raise the leg, that's underneath their chest.

So that it is higher than the other leg.

Then it means that your baby needs to use less

effort, I guess,

to lift their head because there's not a much as much gravity pushing against

them. So they find it easier in this position. Also,

I would provide more support to your baby by putting your hand on their bottom.

And again, that helps shift the weight to their legs,

which means it's easier to lift their head in this position.

So we know tummy time is a really, really hard activity for our babies.

So what we need to do as parents is try and make it fun for them.

So that instead of focusing on the activity itself has been really hard.

Our Bubs are distracted by watching toys or listening to us, sing to them.

And they're actually thinking, oh maybe yes, it's a bit hard,

but this is funny or this is enjoyable for me.

So there's lots of different ways that we can make tummy time more enjoyable for

our baby.

The first really simple thing is to do when your baby's doing traditional tummy

time, you can lie directly opposite them and sing them a song. Um,

I generally seeing if you're happy to know raise your head. Do it really,

really quickly when your baby's newborn,

because they've only got a short period of time where they're happy in this

position. And then I quickly flipped the one to their back.

And then as they get stronger in this position,

I sing it for a longer period of time and then flip them onto their back.

The other thing you can do is place a non breakable mirror in front of their

face so that when they lift their head, they can see their face.

We know babies really, really like seeing faces.

So this is another fun way to entertain your bub.

The other thing you can do is put a toy in front of them. Now,

remember babies can see in colour.

What they like best at this age is high contrast toys,

and they can see best from eight inches. So it's 20 centimeters. They see best.

So you place the toy 20 centimeters to eight inches away.

So they'll look at it when they raise their head.

The other thing you can do is you could place a colourful book,

or you could read a book to them when they're in this position. Again,

make it a really quick activity initially so that they enjoy it.

And then the last thing you can do to make it more enjoyable is you can try

tummy time in different places in the house.

So instead of doing it in the same place all the time with the same toys,

you can do it so that your baby's doing tummy time, looking out the window,

which is when they can see the trees and the birds and any pets.

So it makes tummy time, a bit more enjoyable for our Bubs.

So I only have two don'ts.

My first one is don't stop tummy time because your baby doesn't like it.

Remember all babies, don't like tummy time.

So they will cry and fuss when they're placed in tummy time,

because it is so hard.

But the only way it gets easier for our bubs is if we do it frequently

throughout the day, and you do it for short burst.

So I would only do it for a really short burst.

If your baby absolutely hates it and then make sure they're happy and then flip

them onto their back. As they get stronger,

you'd increase that length of time that they're in tummy time. Now,

remember those four different positions for tummy time.

Your baby might hate that traditional tummy time,

but there's those three other positions you can do and you can grade them.

So that they're easier.

So remember you could provide support at their bottom to kind of shift the body

weight to their legs. So it's easier to raise their head.

You can use rolled up towels. You could lift your leg.

So you can make tummy time easier for your baby in the beginning.

And as they get stronger,

you can start to fade those additional kind of supports that you're giving away

because they don't need it anymore.

But you just need to persist with tummy time, make it short,

enjoyable bursts, and then your baby will get stronger.

And then they'll be in that position for longer, which is a success.

Lastly, don't stress if you don't get your tummy time quota done that day.

It is totally fine. There are going to be days that are complete ride off,

and that is fine.

Your baby might be clingy and fussy one day and you can't get to tummy time.

Totally fine. Tomorrow is a new day.

Tummy time will get easier if your baby practices frequently and as they get

stronger and they're going to be less fussy in this position and they'll start

to prefer it.

So just remember those four different tummy time positions and tummy time will

get significantly easier for you and your Bub most importantly.

So that is it Moms and Dads, that's my do's and don'ts for tummy time.

I really hope tummy time becomes an easier activity for you and your Bub.

But remember just those four different tummy time positions.

You don't have to do that traditional tummy time.

So remember those four and try them out throughout the day.

You'll find one that your baby prefers,

and you can just keep doing that until your baby gets strength in that position.

And then they give me more tolerant of the other tummy time positions,

which is that traditional tummy time on the floor. If you've liked this video,
